An Introduction to Korean Makeup

When it comes to Korean makeup, the majority of things boils down to the fact that less is more. Unlike to the makeup style and routines in Western culture, Korean and generally East Asian cultures strive towards the youthful and pure makeup looks. So what are the main features of Korean makeup?

1. dewy finish

One of the most prominent features of Korean makeup is the dewy base. Compared to the preferred matte look of the Westerners, Koreans favour upon a glowing, dewy and natural base to radiate a clear and youthful vibe.

Rather than looking oily and greasy, a dewy look gives off a hydrated feel to the skin, thus making the skin seem more refreshed and young.

2. Straight, Light Brows

It seems that the latest rend among Westerners is the defined, strong arched row. However for East Asian faces (mine included), such a style doesn't suit our faces. A straight and soft brow is more suited for Korean (and East Asian) face shapes as the brow shape already naturally frames our face.

Koreans also flock for this shape of brows as, again, it highlights youth.

As someone who's hopped onto the straight-brow wagon,a soft and natural brow is definitely more flattering for those with soft features.

3. Warm, natural, neutral tones

(As you can probably guess now, I have a thing for Park So Ra)

Basically all Korean cosmetic brands have a particular palette or collection based solely around warm, neutral and pinkish-natural tones. This is a result of the overall guideline set upon Korean makeup, less is more.

By having a balanced and natural makeup using natural hues, the complete look radiates an innocent, lively or moody image - depending on the particular colours you're using. Take a look at Pony (top right), for example. The delicate pinks used in her eyes, cheeks and lips gives the Youtuber/makeup artist an innocent aura as it softens her features as well as giving her a flowering glow.

All warm, natural and neutral tones that are a staple in Korean makeup provide that desired youthful style through the way they give off a flattering yet natural sense, complimenting the idea of less is more.
